Our Story

The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas Police Department is dedicated to serving and protecting the community while upholding the values and traditions of the Kickapoo people. With a focus on community engagement and transparency, the department aims to foster trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the tribe's members.

Since January of 2024, the new administration has been actively working to rebuild the police department by implementing standardized field training programs and enhancing community outreach. These efforts are designed to strengthen relationships within the community and ensure that the department operates with integrity and accountability, ultimately creating a safer environment for all.

Meet the Leadership

Chief Alex Batstone and Assistant Chief Payton Beims

After being assigned as roommates, Chief Alex Batstone and Assistant Chief Payton Beims graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center with the 256th Basic Training Class. While attending the academy, Batstone and Beims became good friends and stayed in touch after leaving KLETC.

Chief Batstone began his career with the Grandview Plaza Police Department near Junction City, Kansas. After that, Batstone went to work for the Prairie Band Potawatomie Police Department where he became the Community Resource Officer. Batstone then went on to work for the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority (MTAA) where he would eventually take on the role of Patrol Sergeant before taking on the role as Chief for the Kickapoo Tribe.

Lieutenant Payton Beims began his law enforcement career in Atwood, Kansas with the local police department there. Beims served as a Patrol Officer, and eventually Public Relations Officer,  until deciding to take a short break from law enforcement which led him to becoming a Child Protection Investigator for the Kansas Department for Children and Families. Beims then went to work for the Rawlins County Sheriff's Office where he rose to the rank of acting Undersheriff. After that, Beims relocated to Topeka to assist Chief Batsone in rebuilding the Kickapoo Tribal Police Department.
